Team-Based Learning

In the Bachelor of Communication Science, the courses News and Journalism and Introduction to Communication Science incorporate team-based learning (TBL) as an educational model. In the Bachelor of Dentistry, TBL is a structural component of all core courses in the first two years of the programme.

TBL is a form of guided discovery learning, designed to help students apply knowledge and collaboratively tackle complex issues. The process follows a structured sequence: individual learning, followed by group analysis and application. A key component of this model is the use of two assessments: the individual Readiness Assurance Test (iRAT) and the team Readiness Assurance Test (tRAT). These tests are identical, but the first is completed individually, while the second is taken in teams.

In teams, students discuss each question, compare individual answers, and debate until they reach consensus. Immediate feedback is provided after each attempt. If the answer is incorrect, the team continues until they find the correct response. The number of points earned depends on how many attempts were needed to get it right.

Teams can also appeal questions if they disagree with the wording or correct answer. With well-reasoned arguments, they can persuade instructors to review and possibly approve their response. The strength of their argumentation determines whether the appeal is granted.

This approach encourages discussion among peers, leading to deeper understanding of the subject matter. It is also a strong example of formative dialogue, stimulating critical thinking and engagement. By forming diverse teams, students benefit from different perspectives, aligning with the Mixed Classroom model, which enhances peer learning.
