Procedure

  1. Students generate a complete research proposal using an AI tool on a topic relevant to the course or their research interests, providing the AI with specific parameters (research question, disciplinary context, scope, target length, required sections)
  2. Students conduct structured peer review of an AI-generated research proposal (either their own or another student's) using a formal review framework that evaluates:
    • Scientific merit and significance: Is the research question important, original, and likely to advance knowledge in the field?
    • Feasibility and practicality: Can the proposed research realistically be conducted within stated resource, time, and technical constraints?
    • Methodological rigor: Are research methods appropriate, sufficiently detailed, and scientifically sound?
    • Literature integration: Is relevant background literature properly identified, synthesized, and integrated into the proposal rationale?
    • Logical coherence: Do sections connect logically and build a persuasive argument for the proposed research?
    • Scientific rigor: Are potential confounds, limitations, and alternative explanations adequately addressed?
    • Resource requirements: Are budget estimates, timeline projections, and personnel requirements realistic and justified?
    • Ethical considerations: Are necessary ethical issues (human subjects, animal welfare, environmental impact, data privacy) appropriately addressed?
  3. Students provide comprehensive written feedback using a structured review form modeled on journal peer review processes
  4. Students compare AI-generated proposals with proposals written by peers without AI assistance, identifying systematic patterns of difference
  5. Facilitate class discussion synthesizing observations across multiple reviews
