360-degree feedback is an evaluation process that collects feedback from different sources in a work or study setting, for example managers, co-workers, fellow students or colleagues. This provides a detailed picture of a students' performance from different perspectives, which can be used to assess their skills and knowledge, or their progress.
You can use 360-degree feedback for your students to help them improve their social skills, communication skills and professional development. For example, in a course a 360-degree feedback process can help students develop their skills in teamwork and leadership. Some examples:
- A group project where each group member provides feedback on the performance of other group members.
- An internship where students get feedback from their supervisors, peers and their internship company.
- An education where students get feedback from teachers, supervisors and other students.
To use the 360-degree feedback process for assessment, use these steps:
- Define the purpose of the process: why do you want to use 360-degree feedback and what behavioural or performance indicators you want to measure?
- Choose the participants: who gives feedback and who receives it.
- Choose a tool such as online questionnaires, interviews or a group discussion.
- Train the participants, so they know how to give and receive feedback.
- Collect the feedback, preferably anonymously to get honest and unbiased feedback.
- Analyse the feedback and identify trends and bottlenecks. This information can help to make targeted improvements.
- Communicate the results with the students and discuss how to make improvements based on the feedback obtained.
- Follow up on the improvements made as a result of the feedback and evaluate the students on their growth and results.
