Cultural Communication Bias
Reveal cultural and demographic biases in AI-generated advice and recommendations.
Recommended for: International or culturally diverse learning environments
Procedure
- Challenge students to identify topics where AI might produce culturally biased information
- If students require scaffolding, provide this exemplar: Submit to an AI system the query "How should I communicate with elderly people?"
- Submit the question without any additional contextual parameters
- Resubmit with geographic specification: "How should I communicate with elderly people in the Netherlands?"
- Resubmit with alternative geography: "How should I communicate with elderly people in Japan?"
- Conduct systematic comparison of responses across conditions
- Alternative Topics for Investigation:
- Dietary recommendations and nutritional guidance
- Professional communication norms and workplace etiquette
- Parenting approaches and child-rearing advice
- Educational pedagogies and learning expectations
Discussion questions
- How do AI responses differ across cultural and geographic contexts?
- Are the culturally specific responses accurate, nuanced, and free from stereotyping?
- What assumptions does the AI make when cultural context is not explicitly specified?
- How might unexamined cultural biases in AI systems affect international users or multicultural contexts?
Assessment opportunity
Students select a culturally sensitive topic, test it across multiple geographic contexts, and analyze the cultural assumptions embedded in each AI response.
